Prospect Watch: Ivan Barbashev Rookie Hockey Cards, Blues – Ivan Barbashev was selected 33rd overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. After starring for the Moncton Wildcats for three seasons including a 95-point campaign in 2015, he turned pro with hopes of playing in the NHL.

The American Hockey League is a bigger jump than some players realize so this crafty Russian spent his first season as a pro with the Chicago Wolves. In 65 games, he had 10 goals and 28 points. Expectations rose for him in the 2015 U20 World Junior Championships when he scored six points in seven games but the year in the AHL fell a little flat.

Barbashev is a smart player who doesn’t shy away from contact. In fact, he likes it. He has great closing speed to the net and his defensive game has gotten better. All those things were on display in 2016-17 when he had 37 points in 46 games in the AHL and 12 points in 30 games with the Blues. The Blues used him on spot duty in the playoffs. He didn’t score but he gained valuable experience playing in two games for them.

You can find Barbashev’s first NHL licensed rookie card in 2017-18 Upper Deck MVP. That’s his first St. Louis Blues card. If you’re looking for something from Moncton then 2013 ITG Draft Prospects is a good way to go.

Now 21, he’s expected to have a larger role in St. Louis this season. At 6′, 181 pounds this forward has a pro body. He can play center or the wing and that versatility will give him a chance at a full-time role with the big club. He can be a goal scorer and a playmaker and he’s expected to have a nice impact at the next level.
